Amanita Muscaria

Photograph © George A. Jardine

Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park a few days ago, I came across this. I sent the photo to a friend, whose father is a noted mycologist. He said: “Amanita Muscaria. The Vikings ate it… then went to war. Drank their pee to stay drugged. Their victims called them ‘Berzerk’, as a way of saying the vikings acted crazy. Berzerk meaning shirted with a wolves’ pelt? Or bare shirted? No one is sure.”

How cool is that?

I was pretty hungry when I stumbled on it.. but I was also pretty sure I didn’t want to eat it.

Beware! Amanita Muscaria has been know to induce outrageous HDR in photographers.

Is that what causes it!?!?!

I think it must also be responsible for a lot of other nonsense that you see around online these days. :-)
