What is the very best possible way to view my Lightroom Library Video Tutorials? Hands-down, bar-none, it’s absolutely, positively gotta be sitting on your couch in the comfort of your living room, with your iPad in your hand (or a cocktail :-), watching them streaming to your very own television.
I’ve had a Mac Mini here at home connected to my HDTV now for a couple of years. It’s easy to do, and it makes a pretty decent way to watch internet content on your TV. This is especially nice when it’s a TV show, or a movie, or something that you actually want to sit back and watch, rather than sitting up at your work desk, watching on your computer.
But somehow the computer display conversion from DVI -> HDMI onto your television is just not quite right. The picture is not quite sharp, the audio is different, and always having to reach for the keyboard and mouse just doesn’t make it.
You can solve all this for just $99 with Apple’s new version of the Apple TV, which is a complete no-brainer. You just plug it in, connect it to your wireless network and your television with an HDMI cable, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes, and voilà! The high resolution iPad versions of my tutorials are then perfectly scaled up to 720p on your HDTV. They never looked better.
And no, having an iPad is not required. You can stream the tutorials to an Apple TV directly from your computer running iTunes 10.1. If you do have an iPad, even better. Because when you stream the videos from your iPad, you get the added bonus of using your iPad as the video controller. Plus, the setup is even easier than streaming from iTunes, because it does not require activating Home Sharing. Cool!
